In-Laws and Divorce

Sounds like a terrible mix? but, it doesn’t have to be!

Don’t let assumptions about divorce define your relationships with wider family.

For some, the prospect of leaving behind their in-laws can be a serious upside in a divorce scenario. But many people don’t feel that way. And often the ‘in-law’ side of the family can be awfully conflicted, feeling they should take sides or that it would be wrong to maintain a close relationship with their child’s former partner.

But those attitudes are really outdated now. For the many couples who approach divorce together, on the basis that this was a successful relationship which had a shelf-life, not a ‘failure.’ There’s a ready-made narrative for family and friends: we’re approaching this together, and we’re not choosing sides or falling out, so you don’t have to either.

If it is safe to approach divorce in this way, it really will enable you both, and your family and friends, to evolve your relationships naturally. If you’ve never been that close to your father-in-law, that’s fine! But if you do have a close bond, you don’t have to forsake it. And if you have children, you will be giving them a wonderful gift if you create an environment where they can continue to foster relationships with both sides of the family as they grow. Blended families really can be the most incredible source of joy.
