About This Course

Seen from the outside, the laws and processes of the family court when it comes to dividing resources on divorce can seem utterly baffling to the uninitiated. Suffice it to say, the common perception that resources are ‘divided 50-50’ is far from the whole story – in fact, equal division is a comparative rarity.  In England & Wales we have a highly flexible system, designed to take account of the individual circumstances of individual families, avoiding the one-size-fits-all approach of some other jurisdictions.

The flip side of this bespoke approach is a degree of complexity, and its inevitable consequence, expense. This course is designed to demystify the principles in play and to identify further resources to guide your thinking as you move through the process of separation. But is not and never can be a substitute for seeking expert advice on your own family’s specific circumstances.

In this course we will explain in a nutshell:

  • The law in outline;
  • How it has been applied in real life;
  • Key takeaways; and
  • When you should consider seeking further expert advice.

Please note that the law relating to unmarried couples is very different and is not addressed in this course.
