What Does Research Say About Divorce And Children?

We regularly post the latest news and research on our feed. But sometimes it’s helpful to have a recap. And when it comes to research about the impact of divorce on children, there’s a theme which comes through again and again.

It’s not divorce itself which is emotionally harmful to children. What can cause children long-term emotional repercussions and harm is witnessing their parents in entrenched and prolonged conflict. That can happen in a bad divorce, but it can also happen in a bad marriage.

If you are in a relationship which no longer meets your needs, and is making you both extremely miserable, the best thing for your mental health and that of your children may be to accept the relationship has run its course. Do not let shame, or guilt, or stigma, stand in the way of making the right choices for you and your children.

Know that divorce is a hard life change to navigate, and most people need professional support to navigate it well. When it comes to children, there are some excellent co-parenting experts (not lawyers like us) who can help you and your children navigate this transition and thrive.
