There is a dubious statistic (no lawyers we know understand where it has come from) that the most divorce applications are issued on the first Monday of January each year. Which has resulted in ‘Divorce Day’, when media outlets all report about divorce.
The decision to separate and divorce is the result of months, often years, of soul-searching. It’s not a decision people take because it’s a miserable Monday in January.
What’s particularly difficult for many families is the way the story is reported in the press. Often it’s an excuse for an onslaught of negative stories, from celebrity divorces gone wrong to the rising cost of divorce. Sometimes there are stories about ‘how to save your marriage’. All this does is make people who are going through divorce feel bad about themselves, and reinforce the stigma surrounding divorce.
Know that these perspectives on divorce are out-dated and simply represent a lack of knowledge and understanding from those who are writing them. Many of us in the family law world are working hard to break down the stigma surrounding divorce, and educate the wider public that it’s OK if your marriage has a shelf-life, and that separation can be navigated with kindness, dignity and for a fixed and sensible budget.
So don’t let the reports get you down- nobody knows what is best for your family better than you.
